Why the iPhone 11 Does Not Show Battery Percentage by Default
The iPhone 11 uses a battery design that fills to about 80 percent at 100 percent charge to prolong long-term health. Because of the tight fit around the battery, Apple does not display a numeric percentage in the status bar unless you turn it on. The feature is optional and does not change how the phone charges or reports full charge; it simply adds a numeric indicator next to the icon.
Enable Battery Percentage in Settings
To add the battery percentage to the status bar on your iPhone 11, open Settings, tap Battery, then turn on Battery Percentage. The change appears immediately at the top of the screen. It remains visible until you turn the setting off. This status-only display does not show time to empty or affect Background Activity or Low Power Mode behavior.
- Open Settings
- Tap Battery
- Toggle Battery Percentage on
Battery Percentage in Today View
In addition to the status bar, you can add a battery widget to Today View for a larger, always-accessible readout. Swipe right from the left edge of your Home Screen, scroll to the bottom, tap Edit, add Batteries, then select Add Widget. This widget shows charge level and can be resized on supported homescreens. It provides a persistent visual indicator without relying on the status bar alone.
Interpret the Numbers with Context
A percentage in the status bar reflects the reported charge of the integrated battery at the moment it is measured. Temporary dips can occur when temperature, peak processing demand, or inefficient charging cycles affect sensors. Consistent differences between expected and reported levels may indicate a need to check battery health. Use the percentage as one input alongside usage patterns rather than an absolute guarantee of remaining time.
Track Battery Health Over Time
iOS includes a built-in tool that shows maximum capacity relative to new, which helps explain changes in runtime and percentage accuracy. As lithium-ion cells age, the phone may report reduced time at the same percentage. You can view this under Settings, Battery, Battery Health. When maximum capacity falls significantly below 100 percent, consider service options and realistic expectations for full-charge behavior.
Practical Comparison of Battery Options
| Option | What It Shows | When to Use |
|---|---|---|
| Status Bar Percentage | Current charge as a numeric value | Quick glances at remaining power |
| Battery Widget in Today View | Charge level plus optional time-based outlook | At-a-home-screen visibility without unlocking |
| Battery Health Feature | Maximum capacity and peak capability | Evaluating long-term battery wear |
Troubleshoot Missing or Unexpected Readings
If the percentage does not appear after enabling it, restart your phone and confirm that the toggle is on in Settings, Battery. Check for iOS updates that may refine sensor calibration. If the issue persists and health is degraded, contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider for diagnostic testing. Avoid relying on inaccurate percentage readouts when planning critical usage without a backup power source.
