The test is typically done in a clinic or imaging center. You will remove clothing and jewelry from the waist up and may be asked to change into a gown. Positions vary, but images are commonly taken while standing or lying down. You will be asked to hold still and sometimes to take a quick breath during the exposure. The procedure is generally quick, involves minimal discomfort, and does not require sedation. Radiation exposure is kept as low as reasonably achievable; pregnant people should inform their clinician beforehand. Serious risks are very low, and the benefit of useful information usually outweighs potential risks when the test is appropriately ordered.

Interpreting Results and Next Steps

A radiologist reviews the images and sends a report to the ordering clinician, who will combine the findings with your symptoms and exam. Possible results include no acute fracture or dislocation, signs of arthritis, alignment issues such as scoliosis, or evidence of prior injury. If something unclear or concerning appears, further imaging or follow-up may be recommended. Normal X-rays can be reassuring, but they do not exclude all causes of back pain.
