Symptoms lasting beyond 10 days, severe swelling around the eyes, high fever, or neurologic changes may indicate complications and warrant prompt medical evaluation. Persistent unilateral symptoms should be assessed carefully to rule out less common but important causes.

Diagnosis of sinus disease typically begins with a detailed history and physical exam, including nasal endoscopy.
